Review Top Ten Australian Rankings

Hobart is a city that effortlessly punches above its weight. With its world-class culinary scene, thought-provoking art, and a backdrop of rugged mountains and deep blue waters, the Tasmanian capital is undoubtedly one of Australia’s top holiday destinations. But here is the secret that seasoned travellers know: while Hobart’s CBD and waterfront are incredibly walkable and undeniably charming, the true magic of southern Tasmania lies just beyond the city limits. To truly experience the untamed wilderness, the historic convict sites, and the farm-gate foodie trails, you need your own set of wheels. If you want to optimise your itinerary and travel at your own pace, securing a Hobart car rental is the smartest move you can make. Here is everything you need to know about exploring Hobart and its breathtaking surrounds by car, including where to go and top tips for navigating Tassie’s unique roads. Why Do You Need a Car in Hobart? In the era of AI trip planners and meticulously curated travel itineraries, one piece of advice remains consistent across the board: Tasmania is a road trip destination. While public transport and ride-sharing can get you around the inner city, relying on them severely limits your ability to explore on your own schedule. Having a car gives you the ultimate freedom to chase the sunrise up a mountain, pull over for fresh oysters at a roadside shack, or linger at a vineyard without worrying about missing the last tour bus back to your hotel. Top Must-Drive Destinations Around Hobart Once you have picked up your vehicle, the island is yours to explore. Here are the top day trips and scenic drives you simply cannot miss. 1. Ascend Kunanyi / Mount Wellington Driving time from CBD: 30 minutes Looming majestically over the city, Kunanyi (Mount Wellington) is a non-negotiable stop. The 21-kilometre drive from the city centre up to the pinnacle is an experience in itself, winding through lush fern glades and temperate rainforest before breaking through the tree line into an alpine landscape. At the summit, 1,271 metres above sea level, you will be treated to sweeping, panoramic views of Hobart, Bruny Island, and the Tasman Peninsula. Tip: Check the road conditions before you go, as the pinnacle road can sometimes close due to snow, even in the warmer months! 2. Step Back in Time at Richmond Driving time from CBD: 25 minutes A short, easy drive into the Coal River Valley brings you to Richmond, one of Australia’s most pristine heritage villages. Home to the oldest bridge in Australia (built by convict labour in 1823) and the oldest surviving Catholic church, wandering through Richmond feels like stepping into a nineteenth-century painting. After soaking up the history, be sure to visit the local bakeries for a classic scallop pie, and stop by the surrounding boutique wineries to sample some of Tasmania’s famous cool-climate Pinot Noir. 3. Taste the Best of Bruny Island Driving time from CBD: 40 minutes to Kettering (plus a 20-minute ferry ride) If you consider yourself a foodie, Bruny Island must be on your itinerary. You will absolutely need a car for this excursion, as the island is vast and the best artisan producers are spread out. Drive south to the town of Kettering and drive your car straight onto the Mirambeena ferry. Once on the island, you can spend the day navigating between local producers of artisan cheeses, freshly shucked oysters, premium honey, and handmade chocolates. Don't forget to drive down to the narrow isthmus known as 'The Neck' for a breathtaking photo opportunity. 4. Explore the Huon Valley Driving time from CBD: 40 minutes Head south-west of Hobart and you will find yourself in the Huon Valley, traditionally known as the apple capital of the 'Apple Isle'. The drive is incredibly scenic, following the winding Huon River. Stop in at rustic cider houses to taste craft cider made from heritage apples, buy fresh produce from roadside honesty boxes, or go for an elevated stroll through the canopy at the Tahune AirWalk. 5. Discover Port Arthur and the Tasman Peninsula Driving time from CBD: 90 minutes The drive down to the Port Arthur Historic Site is arguably one of the most spectacular stretches of coastline in Australia. Along the way, make sure to pull your car over to witness the natural geological wonders of the Tasman Peninsula, including the Tessellated Pavement, the blowhole, and Tasman Arch. The historic convict settlement itself is a hauntingly beautiful, UNESCO World Heritage-listed site that requires a good half-day to properly explore. Essential Tips for Driving in Tasmania If you are visiting from the mainland or overseas, driving in Tassie comes with a few unique quirks. Keep these tips in mind for a safe and seamless road trip: Watch for Wildlife: Tasmania has abundant native wildlife, including wallabies, wombats, and Tasmanian devils. They are incredibly active at dawn and dusk. Avoid driving on regional roads outside of daylight hours if possible, and always reduce your speed in signed wildlife areas. Prepare for Winding Roads: A quick look at a map might make a destination look close, but Tasmanian roads are notoriously winding and hilly. A 50-kilometre drive will likely take much longer than it would on a straight mainland highway. Take your time, enjoy the scenery, and use slow vehicle turnouts to let locals pass. Fuel Up Frequently: Once you leave the major towns, petrol stations can be few and far between, and many in rural areas close early. Make it a habit to top up your tank before embarking on a long day trip. Pack for Four Seasons: Tasmania's weather is famously unpredictable. You might start your drive in brilliant sunshine and end it in freezing rain. Always keep a warm jacket, an umbrella, and sunglasses in the car. Check Unsealed Road Policies: While all the major highways and roads to top tourist spots are sealed, Tasmania has many gravel roads leading to remote beaches and national parks. Check your rental agreement to ensure you are covered to drive on unsealed roads before adventuring too far off the beaten track. Ready to Hit the Road? Hobart is a spectacular starting point for any Tasmanian adventure. While the city offers incredible food, markets, and museums, the rugged beauty of the island is calling just beyond the city limits. By organising your transport early and planning a few unforgettable day trips, you are setting yourself up for the ultimate Tassie holiday. Pack your bags, finalise your itinerary, and get ready to experience the finest sights the south of the island has to offer.
