Personal development has a bad reputation. There’s a good reason for this. You see, a lot of books and courses are made up of pie in the sky nonsense. A Smarter Way To Approach Personal Development
Give Up Magical Thinking
Magical thinking is basically the belief that certain events are connected. This is despite there being no evidence to connection. Often these events are seen as being connected due to some kind of supernatural power. A good example of this is positive thinking. People think that good thoughts alone will somehow change their life. This is insane. Another huge problem is people who believe in things like the law of attraction and manifestation. Simply visualizing success isn’t going to make things happen. Unless you put in the work, you’re not going to get anywhere. This leads us neatly to the next point.
Accept Reality
The big problem with most personal development gurus is that they make it sound as if you can achieve anything. While it’s certainly possible to turn your life around and achieve great things, achieving anything is often impossible. No, you’re not going to make a million dollars in a years, but maybe you could focus on earning more and getting out of debt. This is why it’s so important set goals that are realistic. Yes, big goals can often provide a source of motivation and inspiration, but you don’t want to go overboard.

Take A Long Term View
This ties into the above points. A lot of the time people expect instant, overnight results. This is completely unrealistic and a big reason why personal development has such a bad reputation. Of course you’re not going to change your life in a week or two. And when people don’t get instant results, they give up entirely. This is why you absolutely have to take a long term view. You need to understand that things take time and you have to be willing to put in that time.
Focus On Habits
Habits are unbelievably powerful. The smartest thing you can do is see your goals as a serious of habits which need to be implemented. For example, if you want to lose weight, then don’t focus on the goal of losing weight. Instead, focus on breaking habits surrounding food. Maybe you overeat, or you’re addicted to eating junk food. At the same time you’ll need to develop positive habits, like exercising or walking more often.

Don’t Give Up But Know When To Quit
The worst thing you can do is slam your head against the wall, trying to achieving something which is impossible. This goes hand in hand with setting realistic goals. You want to set goals which you can achieve, but also have the intelligence to understand when something isn’t working. What you also have to understand is that quitting doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. Sometimes quitting a goal can be the best thing you can do. You might actually discover that the goal was wrong for you, and that the alternative is far better.
