With over eight hundred beaches, a choice of national parks and various other amazing sights, a road trip from Sydney to Melbourne is a perfect driving adventure. So fill up your vehicle, choose your route, leave Sydney’s fine dining behind you and get on the road so you can enjoy the variety of attractions at your own pace. The beauty of driving is that you can visit exactly what you want to in your own time and make spontaneous stops when the mood takes you.
Organise a Vehicle
Consider the type of vehicle you require for your trip as although a car will be suitable for the terrain from Sydney to Melbourne, you may want to consider a bigger, more effective beast for less friendly terrains or for carrying cargo. With a distance of just under one thousand kilometres, it’s possible to do the trip comfortably in three to four days. There are two route options and if you’re on a return trip you could take one route there and one route back.
The Coastal Route
The coastal route is perfect for a relaxing drive. Camp at Jervis Bay, which is about a three-hour drive from Sydney and visits its long golden beaches and the Jervis Bay Marine National Park. Eden on the Sapphire coast, is the halfway point and well worth an overnight stay so you can go whale spotting, enjoy the beaches or explore Ben Boyd National Park. Before you reach Melbourne visit East Gippsland, the huge area covering the entire south-east corner of the country. Boasting the largest lake system and one of the longest beaches in the Southern Hemisphere, take a boat trip to Gippsland Lakes and take it easy on Ninety Mile beach.
The Heritage Route
The driving route offers history and culture as the inland road driving takes you to villages and towns built by the early settlers and gold miners. Make your first stop the capital Canberra and take in the various architectural feats and visit the Australian War Memorial and the National Museum of Australia. After Canberra enjoy the cultural heritage of Albury-Wodonga and visit the Murray River where you can kayak, or take a boat trip. Before you reach Melbourne, stop at Bendigo and take a ride on the tram and visit the gallery where art dates back to the 1850s.
Whatever vehicle you use and whatever route you take, a road trip from Sydney to Melbourne has it all. Drive carefully and enjoy the freedom of a trip where you can stop where you choose. Make sure you plan your route so that you don’t drive by some of the many highlights.
