Early Start
- Having been born on Saint Patrick’s Day, Nick Rivera Caminero enjoyed attending parades for the holiday as a child.
- He developed an affinity for hip-hop while living in Massachusetts, especially East Coast acts like Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch and LL Cool J.
- Having never spoken Spanish before moving to Puerto Rico, Nicky Jam initially experienced culture shock.
- His Spanish-language skills were also improved through Caribbean hip-hop and reggaeton.
- At age eleven, he was bagging items at the Pueblo Xtra discount grocery store when he started rapping about them, which impressed a customer who invited him to record with a local indie label.
- At fifteen, he tried cocaine for the first time after experiencing a difficult breakup with his girlfriend shortly after the album’s release.
Career Journey
- 2004: He obtained success in Puerto Rico with hit singles such as “En la Cama” and “Guayando” while in the group. He also launched solo albums such as Haciendo escante (2001) and Vida escante (2004).
- 2010: Nicky Jam survived a nearly fatal overdose that inspired him to quit drugs completely.
- 2015: Nicky Jam received his first Latin Grammy for Best Urban Performance when Enrique Iglesias contacted him about collaborating on the song “El Perdón”.
- 2017: He launched the album Fénix, which cover included a mural painted in Medellín of Nicky Jam with the Spanish word for “Phoenix”.
- 2018: His partnership with J Balvin, “X”, ranked on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 41, which music video sparked comparisons with Sean Paul’s “I’m Still in Love with You” and Drake’s “Hotline Bling”.
- 2019: The album Íntimo came out which spawned the singles “X”, “Atrevete” featuring Sech, and “Whine Up” featuring Anuel AA. In a review published by Billboard, it was deemed “17 songs of pure reggaeton magic”.
