Image stabilization – How to Overcome shakes in Images?
Image stabilization is the technique used to decrease blurring in photographs due to the motion of a camera or the subject to be photographed. The technique used is for balancing pan and tilt i.e. angular motion of the camera. It is to be used in still cameras where camera shake is most undesirable especially at slower shutter speeds or with the use of high focal length lenses not using a tripod.
Camera shake is the reason for causing frame-wise jitter in the video that has been recorded. You can call Image Stabilization as a reduction in vibration due to camera shake done as a result of hand movement. However, the motion blur caused by severe camera or subject movements cannot be prevented by image stabilization. Image Stabilization has the ability to reduce blur that results from very normal or little shaking of the lens when hand-held shooting is done.

The techniques used for image stabilization are optical image stabilization, sensor-shift image stabilization and digital image stabilization. Optical Image Stabilization is done by changing the optical path. This technique is put into practice in the lens itself and not in the camera. This helps in the reduction of the size of the camera as it does not require the building of glass lenses in the camera body.
Different camera companies use different terminology for different Optical Image Stabilization. Canon uses Image Stabilization, Nikon uses Vibration Reduction, Sony uses Super Steady Shot, Sigma uses Optical Stabilization, Tamron uses Vibration Compensation and Pentax uses Shake Reduction for the same Optical Image Stabilization. Many camera manufacturers turn off the Image Stabilization feature automatically when the camera is tripod mounted.

In another technique called sensor-shift image stabilization, the sensor in the camera is moved in such a manner that it offsets the camera’s motion. The movement of the sensor is done to maintain image projection on the image plane. The advantage of moving the image sensor for stabilization instead of the lens is image stabilization does not depend on the lens being used in the camera. The lenses used in such camera are cheaper and less in weight.
The disadvantage of image sensor movement is an image in the viewfinder is unstable. In video cameras, digital image stabilization is used. In this technique, the electronic image is shifted frame by frame to offset the camera motion. The Image Stabilization can be brought by not using an internal method but by stabilizing the body of camera externally. This can be done by gyroscope attachment to the camera body.
