- Analysis of an animated character is challenging, especially because there is only so much information that can be gleaned from Simba’s actions and speech.
- Always look for the information that contradicts your cur viewpoint.
- If a person is put outside his domain of consciousness, he starts to see the world from the eye of fantasy.
- When you hit the border of knowledge, you start to think with fantasy.
 Summary
Psychologist Carl Jung, the pioneer of analytical psychology, discovered that the personality types come from within the unconscious and are patterns that form our perceptions of the world. These types of patterns are referred to as “archetypes.” While these archetypes cannot be directly experienced, Jung explains that these archetypes can be culturally conditioned and embodied in images and symbols. Although archetypes are most commonly associated with humans, they can also be portrayed by fictional characters in movies and books. The animals in The Lion King reflect a variety of archetypal imagery and symbols that appear throughout the film.

Specifically, Jordan applies two archetypes to Simba, the film’s major protagonist. The first archetype is that of the warrior.

The Warrior character is the most visible because of his willingness to battle for what he believes is his right to be treated fairly. The Orphan archetype is still there in Simba’s brain, although it isn’t as prominent as it was at the film’s beginning. The Warrior archetype has taken over, instilling a sense of stoicism in the newly matured lioness. Simba is the ideal figure to demonstrate the attributes of both The Warrior and The Orphan characters in the story. Considering that this is a children’s animated picture, the character did not have access to any “collective unconscious,” therefore violating Jung’s notion of “archetypes.”
