Coronavirus 10 Way To Prevent Spread In Australia

Coronavirus What’s Happening?

Coronavirus has seemingly come out of nowhere and with a rapidly escalating death toll 2119 at the lastest count (20-02-20 – 23:30 AEDT), there is no doubt it needs to be with closely. Before we get alarmed to know that in any given year that influenza kills a far higher number of people, in fact, Seasonal flu kills 291,000 to 646,000 people worldwide, However, what is concerning is the unknown of what this virus might become.

Symptoms can include:
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath

How it Spreads:

  • Person-to-person spread
  • Spread from contact with infected surfaces or objects

Coronavirus Lethality

The mortality rate is around 2% in the epicentre of the outbreak, Hubei province, the seasonal flu is around 1% so if this was to escalate we would expect a higher figure when compared to influenza. However with strict quarantine in place and China seemingly acting as efficiently as possible we must hope enough has been done to prevent the spread.

Although the virus has spread globally, it is not spreading as rapidly and in China itself. The fifth case of coronavirus has been confirmed in Queensland, taking the total number of confirmed cases in Australia to 15. However, our health service and strong immigration policies are for now keeping the virus at bay.

Coronavirus Should Australia Worry?

So long as the government maintains strict quarantine procedures and continues to cancel flights from mainland China we should be ok. Our health services are second to none. However, there are a few small steps you can take to prevent your personal risk factors against airborne viruses.

  1. Avoid masses of people
  2. Regular hand washing and carry an alcohol gel
  3. Regular exercise and a healthy diet
  4. Regular disinfection of hard surfaces
  5. Review with a Dr should you suspect symptoms
  6. Avoid touching face
  7. Don’t hold handrails
  8. Wash hands after touching elevator buttons, traffic light etc.
  9. Maintain your immune system
  10. Quit smoking
  11. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Gestation Period for Coronavirus

CDC believes at this time that symptoms of COVID-19 may appear in as few as 2 days or as long as 14 days after exposure. This is based on what has been seen previously as the incubation period of MERS-CoV viruses
