How to Migrate to Australia – Available Visa Options

Planning to Migrate to Australia ?  –Here are some available Visa Options

Migrating to Australia is a big step. Ensure your migration is a success by having in place the correct plan. This page advises on the available visa options in your plans to migrate to Australia.

For those with the desire to come live and work in Australia, the starting point is to exploit your visa options. If you possess skills or qualifications that will be beneficial to Australia, there are a number of ways you can get a skilled visa. You can be nominated for a skilled visa by an employer, nominated for a skilled visa by a state or territory government or use SkillSelect to apply for a skilled visa by the Australian Government.

About SkillSelect

SkillSelect is an online service through which Australia manages its skilled migration programme. Through the programme, skilled migration is solely determined by Australia’s economic needs. It gives management support to the government in terms of who can apply for a skilled visa, when they can apply and the number of applicants needed. This significantly cuts down the time spent in applying for visa.

With SkillSelect, the government is able to tackle regional skill shortages. SkillSelect allows intending migrants to indicate if they are willing to live and work in regional Australia. The employers undergoing regional skill shortages have a keen interest here just like the territory governments involved in settling migrants in regional Australia.

How does SkillSelect Work?

If you are a skilled worker or business person with the interest of migrating to Australia, you can submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) as your initial steps in the skilled visa application.

Please note that EOI is not a visa application but rather an indication that you would like to be considered for skilled visa.

In your EOI applied through SkillSelect, you will have to avail a range of information such as:

  • Basic personal information
  • nominated occupation
  • study and education
  • business and investment experience
  • level of English skills
  • work experience
  • details of a skills assessment, related to your nominated occupation

It is then after this that Australian employers, state and territory employers will find and nominate these skilled workers and business people for skilled visas. Also, they can be invited by the Australian Government to begin the visa application process.

Which Visas can be applied for?

After successful submission of EOI via SkillSelect, one must apply for the following five visas:

  • Business Talent (Permanent) visa (subclass 132)
  • Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)
  • Skilled – Nominated visa (subclass 190)
  • Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) visa (subclass 188)
  • Skilled – Nominated or Sponsored (Provisional) visa (subclass 489).

If you are invited by a SkillSelect-approved Australian employer, you can apply for the following three visas:

  • Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457)
  • Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme visa (subclass 187)
  • Employer Nomination Scheme visa (subclass 186)
