International Nelson Mandela Day is celebrated every year on 18th July. The day is a global call to action for individuals to acknowledge their power to impact others around them positively and celebrate Nelson Mandela’s life. Nelson Mandela’s Biography
Nelson Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa, on 18th July 1918, to Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and Winnie Mandela. Nonqaphi Nosekeni was his mother, and Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela was his father. Jongintaba, the Tembu’s regent, reared him when his father died. He always listened to stories of his forefathers’ bravery in their fight for independence. He studied at the University College of Fort Hare for his B. A. However, owing to the students’ protests he had joined, he did not earn his degree. He was expelled from college as a result. Then he returned to Mqhekezweni’s Great Place, where the monarch warned that if he did not finish his degree, he would arrange a marriage for him.
He joined the African National Congress party in 1944 and subsequently became the leader of a series of nonviolent rallies in South Africa against the white minority’s administration. He was potentialy imprisoned on Robben Island in Cape Town, South Africa, from 1964 to 1982 for spearheading the anti-apartheid campaign and his belief in the human right to live in freedom. He was then elected as the President of South Africa in 1994 due to his efforts. As a result, he became South Africa’s first black president. He remained president in office until 1999. He and another former South African president, Frederic Willem de Klerk, shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
