This world- heritage- listed national park is an epitome of beauty, art and culture. There is a lot to do and see in this beautiful national park. The park stretches to covers an area of about 19,804 km2 (7,646 sq mi). It extends about 200 kms from north to south and about 100 km from east to west.
The Kakadu National Park is Australia’s biggest terrestrial national park. It is very diverse biologically as well as ecologically. It is one of the most beautiful national parks in Australia.
The park is located in the northern territory of Australia. It is about 171 km southeast to Darwin.
History
The park was established in the year 1979 on 5th April. The idea was proposed in the year 1965. The area was earlier inhabited by the aboriginal people for about 40, 000 years which is quite evident with the many art sites.
Attributes
There are many natural wonders in this national park that intensify its beauty. There are four major rivers that flow through this park. They are – the West Alligator River, the East Alligator River, the entire South Alligator River and the Wildman River. There are more than 280 bird species, about 60 mammal species, 10,000 insect species, 50 freshwater species and about 1,600 plant species in the Kakadu National Park. There are also over 5,000 recorded art sites in this park that takes you to the old times.
Things To Do
Check out the beautiful aboriginal rock art in Kakadu. The east Alligator region and the Nourlangie region showcase the best rock arts. The Gubarra Pools Walk as well as the Bubba Walk will take you to the enticing fauna and flora of the park.
The Yellow Water Cruises and the Guluyambi boat cruise along the East Alligator River will take you around the diverse flora and will also give you a chance to spot animals like crocodile and birds like jabirus, white-bellied sea eagles, magpie geese, brolgas, et al.
A 4WD is a must try for adventure junkies. You can also do fishing and bushwalking. There are many beautiful falls to explore. The twin falls and Jim Jim falls deserve a visit. You can take a canoe to the Twin Falls and soak in the beauty of the falls. You can take a helicopter ride to see the ariel view of the park. Also take a calm swim in the Gunlom top pools in the Mary River region or Jim Jim beach pool and plunge pool in the Jim Jim region.
