Melbourne will host Khruangbin as part of their First Class Tour from Houston, Texas, this December. Last seen here in 2019, the acclaimed trio lives in their universe, with the steady hands of drummer Donald Ray ‘DJ’ Johnson Jr., virtuoso guitarist Mark Speer, and enigmatic bassist Laura ‘Leezy’ Lee holding down their legendary live show, a mixtape of surf-rock cool, dubby disco, and worldly funk.
Khruangbin performs their electric range live with flawless technique and a sound firmly based on travel. With three studio albums to their credit (their debut The Universe Smiles Upon You, 2018’s Con Todo El Mundo, and 2020’s Mordechai), songs like “Dern Kala,” “Maria Tambien,” and “People Everywhere (Still Alive”) have grown to become live anthems for their devoted following, which is no small achievement for a band that primarily plays instrumental music.
Special Appereance
Khruangbin, a Houston, Texas-based master of psych-funk music, will stop in Melbourne as part of their First Class Tour after playing their largest headlining performances in Australia and New Zealand. Khruangbin is presented by Penny Drop and Frontier Touring, featuring special guests Kamasi Washington and Mildlife. Mildlife, one of Melbourne’s favorite groove cosmonauts, will introduce the performance with their kaleidoscope sound. Kamasi Washington, a Los Angeles tenor saxophonist, will join the lineup.
He has collaborated with notable artists, including Herbie Hancock, Florence + the Machine, Flying Lotus, Kendrick Lamar, St. Vincent, and Kendrick Lamar. His gutsy performances and cinematic compositions have influenced a whole new audience. Don’t miss the fantastic Khruangbin and special guests performing live at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.
Biography
Khruangbin is an American musical trio from Houston, Texas. Mark Speer plays guitar, Laura Lee plays bass, and Donald “DJ” Johnson Jr. plays drums for the group. The group is renowned for fusing worldwide musical influences, including psychedelia, dub, rock, and classic soul. Their second studio album, Con Todo El Mundo (2018), draws inspiration from Spain and the Middle East. In contrast, their first studio album, The Universe Smiles Upon You (2015), is inspired by Thai music from the 1960s, notably Luk thung. Speer, Lee, and DJ also present “AirKhruang” radio broadcast on Facebook Live and NTS Radio.
Following their joint tour, Khruangbin included their song “Calf Born in Winter” on Bonobo’s 2014 Late Night Tales album. The song became one of the album’s most well-liked songs and assisted in drawing a preliminary audience[10] for the band’s first EP, History of Flight, and the first album, The Universe Smiles Upon You, which were released in 2015. Following this, Khruangbin was awarded “New Band of the Week” by The Guardian, opening for artists including Massive Attack, Father John Misty, Tycho, and Chicano Batman.
