The Carpenters Biography
Karen Carpenter (1950–1983) and her brother Richard Carpenter (1950–1983) formed the Carpenters, an American singing and instrumental duet (born 1946). Karen’s contralto voice combined Richard’s harmonizing, arranging, and composing talents to create a distinct soft musical style. The Carpenters released ten albums and several singles and television specials throughout their 14-year career. In 1963, the siblings moved from New Haven, Connecticut, to Downey, California. Karen learned the drums while Richard received piano lessons as a kid and went to California State University, Long Beach. They initially collaborated as a duet in 1965, forming the jazz-oriented Richard Carpenter Trio, then the middle-of-the-road Spectrum.
