Samsung Galaxy S7 – Review
2016 has been quite a dramatic year for Samsung and its Galaxy line.
To begin with, the firm had to bear with the rise and fall of the Galaxy Note 7 that turned into a bomb. Users frequently reported cases of the gadget catching fire while still charging. The problem was escalated when one of the users sued the firm for exposing his life to danger. The transport authorities equally weighed in to the matter by banning travellers from carrying the Note 7 into the plane.
With such extremities, Samsung had no other option than to cancel all the preorders and recall the already sold gadgets. The major battery flaw also prompted the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, along with Canada and Mexico, to ban the sale of the phone.
But even before the Note 7 fiasco ensued, there was already the Galaxy S7 debacle. This has since become minimal when the two are compared. It has since then grown to become a worthy flagship product, perfectly replacing the Note 7. It comes with a sleek beautiful design featuring speedy processor, MicroSD slot, 12-megapixel rear camera and powerful battery. However, it was received with mixed reviews due to the waterproofing – which Samsung has verified that it’s fixed.
The recall of Note 7 was a huge setback to Samsung’s plans as the firm sought to counter iPhone 7 efforts. To better understand this, Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 7 just a few weeks before launching of the iPhone 7. This is a marketing trick in which you try to draw attention of the potential buyers before the opponent can start selling his devices. While doing so you also get to shield your customers from being duped away. But Samsung seems to have failed to do so after the burning Note.
Its redemption is thus seen through the Galaxy S7 that is intended to give back confidence to the company’s loyal customers.
The Design
Talk of a beautiful phone and the S7 cannot be mistakenly mentioned. It has a shiny, exotic, metallic finish that is all meant to complement its premium position. The S7 feels like the most desirable – the most beautiful you will ever lay your eyes on.
However, the glossy finish has its own downsides. The shininess implies that its slippery and will not feel as though you have a firm grasp of it. Also, the moment it is covered in greasy fingerprints, the phone looks terrible. It is the kind that you will constantly wipe on your shirt or trouser just to maintain its pristine looks. But don’t give up yet. The oleophobic coatings applied to the Gorilla Glass 4 means it’s easy to get rid of the grease with some few scrubs and retain its attractive looks.
The location of all the buttons has not been tampered when compared with the Galaxy S6. This is a positive decision since the home button and the fingerprint reader are still strategically placed below the screen in the center. The volume buttons have also been left on the left edge while the power button is on the left.
Flipping the Galaxy S7 to the rear side, you meet what actually differentiates the S7 from the S6. The annoying camera “hump” has now been slashed from 1.6mm to 0.46mm. It may not be that a big reduction but makes a significant reduction. With the bump reduced, the phone is more flat and sleeker than ever. In addition, the less prominent bump doesn’t catch your pocket when stowing away.
Samsung has also implemented a process referred to as “Thermoforming” to create curves on both long edges of the rear panel. The inspiration for this design is drawn from the Galaxy Note 5. And what’s the effect of doing so? The phone gets the feeling that it is a lot smaller and effectively pips the S6 in design.
The remaining design fragments have been retained as they are in the S6. The SIM card and microSD drawer are on the top edge; the power and volume buttons are perfectly left as they should and the micro-USB port is at the bottom. It seems Apple’s new invention of eliminating the 3.5mm port hasn’t taken root in the Galaxy S7.
The Display
There are some mild changes that have been made but that doesn’t change the fact that Samsung Galaxy S7 was and is still a phenomenal smartphone.
There are two versions of this: the S7 and the S7 Edge. The S7 has a display size of 5.1 inches while the big bro is 5.5 inches. The 5.1 inches model has a resolution of 1440 x 2560 while the 5.5n comes with a 1080p. The resolution may not be a big deal for the normal user but it is more apparent when it comes to virtual reality. With the phone strapped into a pair of VR goggles, the screen mere centimeters from your eyes, and split in two halves, the resolution required for quality viewing is vital and every extra pixel is taken into consideration.
In any case, the high resolution hasn’t prevented the S7 screen from appearing grainy.
The display also has quite some admirable display. The Korea-based firm has now for a long time been working on the AMOLED technology. This has been integrated in the Galaxy S7, giving it a color-accurate display.
What of the contrast? Well, this is also perfect with the Super AMOLED panel. The color is equally excellent as the phone includes a number of modes.
