Background:
The International Day of the World’s Indigenous People is celebrated on the 9th of August every year. In order to recognize and observe the very first United Nations Working Group on the meeting of the Indigenous Populations held in Geneva in the year 1982. On the 23rd of December, 1994, the general assembly of the UN claimed that the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, shall be observed on the 9th of August every year at the time of the International Decade of the Indigenous People of the world.
In the year 2004, the assembly claimed the Second International Decade of the Indigenous People of the world for 2005-2014. The assembly also formed an idea to continue with the observance of this day every year during its second decade. The major aim of this decade was to strengthen the international co-ordination and co-operation for solving all the issues that are faced by the indigenous folks in different fields of education, culture, environment, human rights and social as well as economic development.
In the year 2000 (April), the Human Rights Commission adopted a fine resolution to form the permanent forum of the United Nations on all kinds of indigenous issues which was signed by the Social and Economic Council. The mandate of the forum is to carry out the discussions of the indigenous issues that are related to the economic, social, educational, cultural, environmental, health issues as well as the issues related to human rights.
