Seychelles: Vallee de Mai
On the island of Praslin, not far from the Acajou Beach Resort, lies the UNESCO World Heritage Site Vallée de Mai. The thick palm forest is one of the world’s smallest national parks, yet its lush flora has earned it the nickname “Garden of Eden.”
The Vallée de Mai is home to indigenous animals and plants, including the uncommon black parrot and the coco de Mer palm. This last factor helped to conserve the rainforest area since 1983. The Glacis Noire Trail, a two-hour round trail with no barriers, leads tourists through the 18-hectare region.
Tokyo: Ogasawara
Tokyo’s more than 300 Pacific Ocean islands are still a secret for visitors to Japan. Aside from the over 100 Izu Islands, situated roughly 1,000km south of Tokyo, the Ogasawara Islands have unique natural features. Aside from the emerald green ocean and excellent sandy beaches, the archipelago’s national park fascinates with its distinct flora and animals.
Because the archipelago was never a continent, it has many indigenous plants and animals, earning it the nickname “Galapagos of the East”. The volcanic islands’ underwater ecosystem with humpback whales, dolphins, green sea turtles, coral reefs, and tropical fish species is very diversified.
Skåne/Sweden: Stenshuvud
Forests, beaches, and spectacular vantage points: The park covers 400 hectares, including 80 hectares of sea. The same-named mountain has three summits, the tallest being 97m.
The varied terrain includes sandy heathlands, swamps, and lengthy beaches. Hiking routes of various lengths lead to the park’s natural wonders. The Skaneleden stretch SL4 connects Kivik in the north to Simrishamn in the south.
Hawaii: Haleakala
“House of Sun”, as it is known in Hawaiian, is one of the world’s quietest locations owing to its position. The inactive shield volcano is Maui’s highest point at almost 3,000m.
A journey to Haleakala is especially popular around daybreak, when the first rays of the light strike the sacred mountain and touch the faces of guests. The House of the Sun is a spectacular site to hike, photograph, and camp at any time of year. The Plantation Inn Bed & Breakfast in Lahaina is more comfortable.
