Biography

Graham Russell, an English singer-songwriter and guitarist, and Russell Hitchcock, an Australian lead vocalist, make up the soft rock duet Air Supply. They started in 1975 with a variety of backing vocalists and musicians. They enjoyed a string of successes worldwide, including eight top 10 songs in the US in the early 1980s. On 1 Dec 2013, during the annual ARIA Awards, the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) admitted Air Supply into their Hall of Fame.

The ARIA Music Awards are an annual ceremony that honors all genres’ success, quality, and innovation in Australian music. They started back in 1987. 2013 saw the induction of Air Supply into the Hall of Fame. Air Supply is one of Australia’s most distinctive and successful musical tales, thanks to their numerous timeless melodies that have transcended decades and brought them groundbreaking success abroad. At the 27th Annual ARIA Awards, Air Supply will be inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, according to Denis Handlin AM, ARIA Chairman & CEO of Sony Music Entertainment Australia & New Zealand and President Asia.

History

Russell Hitchcock, Graham Russell, and Chrissie Hammond first crossed paths on 12 May 1975 while sharing the stage in the Australian version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical Jesus Christ Superstar. While the concert was still running, they created a harmony singing group in Melbourne, with Russell on guitar and vocalists Hammond and Hitchcock. In 1976, Hammond quit the vocal group to start Cheetah, and Jeremy Paul (formerly of Sofrok and subsequently Divinyls) took over on bass guitar and vocals. Hitchcock, Russell, and Paul joined together to form Air Supply. “Love and Other Bruises,” the group’s debut song, was released in November 1976 and reached its highest position of No. 6 in January 1977 on the Australian Kent Music Report Singles Chart. Their debut album, Air Supply, was released in December and went gold in Australia.
