History
In Dripping Springs, Texas, the band Midland was founded. The trio first connected in Los Angeles, where Jess Carson and Cameron Duddy had played in several bands over the years. When Carson moved to L.A., Duddy and Mark Wystrach founded the country-rock group The Young Whiskey. The group reunited for Duddy’s wedding in August 2013 at Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Wystrach and Carson served as groomsmen. According to Duddy’s recollection of the events, Wystrach and Carson arrived at Jackson Hole a week before the wedding.
They recommended beginning a project together after performing songs on Carson’s front porch. Duddy phoned Carson and Wystrach six months later, in January 2014, and suggested that they record some songs. They traveled to the Sonic Ranch recording facility in El Paso, Texas, where they recorded for ten days. According to Wystrach, “We formed a band when we traveled to the Sonic Ranch. We left with the conviction that what had occurred.” Wystrach and Duddy then relocated to Texas, where Carson resided, together with their families. They chose the moniker “Fair to Midland” by Dwight Yoakam as the inspiration for their band.
