Early Start
- Originally born Robyn Rihanna Braithwaite, she was the daughter of accountant Monica Braithwaite and warehouse supervisor Ronald Fenty.
- During her childhood in Bridgetown, she sold clothes on the street with her father in a three-bedroom bungalow.
- Due to her father’s addiction to alcohol and crack cocaine, her childhood had a profound impact on her parents’ relationship. In order to break up fights between Rihanna and her father, Rihanna would often step in between them.
- As a child, Rihanna had many CT scans for the excruciating headaches she suffered.
By the time she was 14, her parents had divorced, and her health began to improve. - Reggae music dominated her childhood.
- Shontelle, the later Barbadian singer-songwriter, was Rihanna’s drill sergeant when she was an army cadet in a sub-military program.
- She originally planned to graduate from high school, but decided to become a musician instead.
Career Journey
- 2005: Music of the Sun was launched and ranked at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 and Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA)’s gold certified.
- 2006: Rihanna worked on her second studio album, A Girl like Me.
- 2007: Good Girl Gone Bad was released and peaked at No. 2 in Australia and the US and topped the charts in multiple countries.
- 2008: Good Girl Gone Bad Live, her first live long-form video was made available to public.
- 2009: Rated R, her fourth album, went out and got good feedback from Rolling Stone magazine.
- 2010: Rihanna and rapper Eminem collaborated on “Love the Way You Lie” which reached the top of the charts in over 20 countries. Reaching number two in the UK, it became Rihanna’s first single to sell more than one million copies in the country.
- 2011: Rihanna’s sixth album, Talk That Talk, was released.
- 2012: Coldplay’s “Princess of China”, from their album Mylo Xyloto, and Drake’s “Take Care”, from his album of the same name, were two collaborations that featured Rihanna this year.
- 2014: Rihanna performed on Shakira’s single, “Can’t Remember to Forget You”.
- 2015: Rihanna signed a $25 million contract with Samsung that for promoting Samsung’s Galaxy line of products as the brand sponsored the release of her eighth studio album and its tour.
- 2016: Rihanna released her eighth studio album, Anti, where it ranked at No. 1 on the US Billboard 200, becoming Rihanna’s second No. 1 and eighth top 10 album on the chart.
- 2017: Rihanna was featured on N.E.R.D’s comeback single “Lemon” from their album No One Ever Really Dies.
- 2019: Rihanna registered a song titled “Private Loving” with BMI with co-songwriters Collin Edwards, Monique Lawrence, and Alexander Ogunmokun
- 2020: She was featured on Canadian singer PartyNextDoor’s song “Believe It”.
