A Tragic Death on Christmas Day: Singer George Michael of Careless Whisper
British pop star George Michael, famously known for his song Last Christmas died on Sunday (Christmas Day), according to a family statement. He was 53 years at the time of his death.
“It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage,” publicist Connie Filippello said in a statement issued to multiple news outlets.
The Wham hitmaker made great breakthroughs with his hit songs “Careless Whisper” and “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.”
What’s the Cause of Death?
The family did not provide in the statement the immediate cause of death but Mr.Michael is known to have been struggling with health problems. For instance, in 2011 he suffered from pneumonia that led to a tracheotomy after putting him in a coma. He described his 2011 health issue saying it was “touch and go” as chances of him surviving were minimal.
A year before that in 2010 he had been convicted due to possession of drugs as well as driving under the influence of drugs. This landed his a 4-week stint in prison. But the police statement made it clear that his death had no suspicious circumstances.
Thames Valley Police said: “At this stage, the death is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.”
George Michael rose to fame courtesy of a duo he released with his partner Andrew Ridgeley. He was the frontman of the duo Wham! The two progressed to produce number one hit songs like “Everything She wants” and “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.”

Ridgeley was quick to tweet about the death of his friend saying: I am “heartbroken at the loss of my beloved friend Yog. Me, his loved ones, his friends, the world of music, the world at large. 4ever loved. An xx.”
Singer Bryan Adams tweeted: “Such an incredible singer and a lovely human being, far too young to leave us.”
Comedian Ellen DeGeneres said Michael “was such a brilliant talent. I’m so sad.”
“I am in deep shock,” Mr.John wrote on Instagram. “I have lost a beloved friend — the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist. My heart goes out to his family and all of his fans.”
