The following table lists countries based on their number of military and paramilitary personnel. Building Up Military Personnel in Different Countries
It is obvious in some cases why military sizes are so enormous. Vietnam, North Korea, and Russia, for example, require their citizens to serve a military component.
Despite still technically being at war, Korea and Japan both conscript their citizens into their armies. The conscription age in North Korea is 14. Army recruits enter active service at age 17 and remain there for 13 years. Women may be conscripted under certain circumstances.
Between 18 and 28 is the age at which a man must enlist in South Korea. A minimum of one year is the minimum term of service. Certain exceptions do exist, however: the culture ministry of South Korea recently granted the K-Pop group BTS legal rights to delay their military service.
