Charles Laughton Mini Bios
Born: July 1, 1899
Charles was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England, to Eliza (Conlon) and Robert Laughton, hotel keepers of Irish and English descent, respectively. He was educated at Stonyhurst (a highly esteemed Jesuit college in England) and at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (received gold medal). His first stage appearance was in 1926. In 1937, he founded Mayflower Pictures Corp. with Erich Pommer. American citizen since 1950. A consummate artist, Laughton achieved great success on stage and screen, with many staged readings (particularly of George Bernard Shaw). At 63, Laughton died in Hollywood, California.
