World Post Day 2022

World Post Day

World Post Day is celebrated every year on October 9. On the Universal Postal Union (UPU) anniversary in Switzerland in 1874, the world celebrates World Post Day. The Universal Postal Union (UPU) revolutionized global communications by allowing anyone to send letters to anybody on the globe. Do You Know? The first World Post Day was celebrated in 1969. As a result, countries worldwide celebrate International Postal Day every year. This is a busy day for many reasons.

Post offices in various countries have special stamp collection exhibits; postal measures provide open days, and courses on postal history are offered. The United Nations Postal Administration (UPA) organized this competition for young people. Every year on October 9, the United Nations Postal Administration (UPA) honours the top postal services of the year.

For ages, postal services have been in use. People have been exchanging letters since the dawn of time. Special messengers carried them there on foot or horseback. Many countries began instituting their first national postage systems as early as the 1600s. These were better structured and could be used by many individuals. Finally, nations began to come to terms with exchanging letters globally. In the late 1800s, a worldwide postal service was established, but it was sluggish and complex. In 1874, the United States Postal Union was established, laying the groundwork for today’s efficient postal service. The United Nations took over the UPU in 1948 and made it a UN agency.

History

A letter is one of the most enduring ways of expressing your feelings. It takes an international team to get birthday cards and internet purchases from point A to point B, even if we don’t give it much thought before putting the stamp on the envelope. We may trace the origins of the postal service back to 2500 BC in Ancient Egypt, while the world’s oldest postal service dates back to 550 BC in Iran. The contemporary notion of the mailman was inspired by ancient civilizationscivilizations that used a courier service to transport letters, messages, news, and packages across vast empires. Benjamin Franklin was the 1st postmaster general of the United States of America in 1775 when the country established its postal service. Founded on October 9, 1874, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) permits mail to go freely from your mailbox to Timbuktu and everywhere in between. Thanks to the UPU, this is now possible! At the Tokyo Universal Postal Congress in 1969, the first World Post Day was established.

UPU member nations commemorate World Post Day on October 9 each year to highlight the importance of universal mail and the UPU’s role in society and the global economy. International stamp shows and new postal initiatives are commonplace; India holds an annual festival around the week of October 9 each year. The UPU’s International Letter-Writing Competition for Children Under the Age of 15 is a tribute to its mission of uniting people worldwide. A UPU jury selects the global champion from among the winners from each country. The practice encourages reading and keeps the anticipation of getting a letter in the mail alive.

Importance

The day is potentially celebrated to raise awareness of the importance of postal services in people’s and companies’ daily lives. World Post Day is held on the second Monday of October each year. To mark the occasion, member nations are encouraged to engage in national-level public and media awareness campaigns to promote their post’s role and operations. World Post Day is celebrated in various forms each year. As a working holiday in several countries, World Post Day is celebrated on this day. Several post offices use the occasion to advertise new postal products and services. Several post offices celebrate World Post Day to honour their best staff.

Philatelic exhibitions are held in several nations, and new stamps and date cancellation marks are released. Poster displays at post offices and other public places, open days at post offices, mail centres, postal museums, conferences, seminars, workshops, and cultural and sporting events are just a few of the additional activities planned to celebrate World Post Day 2016. T-shirts and badges are typical keepsakes given out by postal authorities worldwide. In addition, national champions in nations participating in the UPU International Letter-Writing Competition are generally honoured on October 9.
