Captain Ejnar Mikkelsen led Denmark’s Alabama Expedition in 1909 to dispute the United States’ claim to North Eastern Greenland, which was based on the idea that Greenland was divided into two parts. Leaving the crew behind, Mikkelsen sleds across the ice with Iver Iversen, his inexperienced crew member. Greenland is one island, but returning to the ship takes longer and is much harder than expected for the two men. A polar bear attack, extreme hunger, and exhaustion finally led them to find their ship crushed in the ice and their camp abandoned.
