Sink replacement is a simple task that that can be accomplished easily by any individual. Regardless of the sink type you choose, the steps you will follow to install it would be similar, with some differences.Â
For example, the installation is significantly different depending on if you have a top-mounted sink or an under-mounted sink. The former would be lowered into its position, while the latter would require fastening from underneath.Â
Step #1: If replacing, then remove the Old Sink first
When removing an old sink, the first thing you will have to do is shut off the water supplies and the waste line. If your old sink were held in place on the worktop by a silicone sealant, you would need a knife to cut it off carefully.Â
Check the behind of your sink for clamps and fastening clips that hold the sink secure. Use a slot-head screwdriver to undo the clamps and fastening clips. The old sink can now be lifted off the worktop allowing you to prepare the spot for the replacement sink.Â
Step #2: Cleanse and prepare the worktop
Ensure thorough cleaning of the worktop after removing the old sink and avoid leaving any residue from the old sealant. Remove the sealant carefully to prevent scratching the worktop. You may now use a brush to apply the new water-resistant sealant and allow it to dry. Make sure to protect the worktop from any water leaks.Â
Step #3: Assemble the new sinkÂ
Assemble the new sink while the sealant dries. Use the manufacturer’s guide for assembling the sink. This could also involve fitting the faucet and waste unit to ensure they are ready to go. There are two fixing clips for each side of the sink to allow maximum stability.Â
Step #4: Adequate SealingÂ
Seal the sink edges adequately where it sits on the worktop. This seal is required to stop water leakage and protect your worktop from corrosion. Apply the seal provided with the sink by turning it upside down. This makes the seal application easier.Â
This will typically consist of an adhesive-backed edging strip or a small container. Both of these are created to provide a waterproof and dependable seal. To achieve complete coverage, spread this around the rim of the sink.
Step #5: Place the Sink in the desired Location
To achieve a suitable fit, precisely set and position the replacement sink in the space left by your previous sink (or in the new space established in a new kitchen). The sink ought to be precisely leveled on the worktop’s sealant around the corners.
Step #6: Clamp the Clips together
You will now need to secure the sink’s edges to the worktop through the clips mentioned in step 3. Clamp the sink securely in position and trim off any leftover sealant when possible for a cleaner look.
Step #7: Connect the Taps and Pipes
Connectors are needed to connect new taps to water supply lines or to reinstall your new faucet. Then, to form a watertight seal, add Teflon tape to the threading of the pipeline where it connects the tap.
